Completing the Crematorium

Preparing for the Queen’s Platinum Celebration

Further to our previous post, we have completed the works at the South Oxfordshire Crematorium. We are now in the 12-month maintenance phase, where we nurture and care for the plants and other landscaping.

Working with Beard Construction, we have planted over 1000 shrubs, 77 trees, many many bulbs, ornamental hedging plus undertaken turfing and mulching.

Our ongoing maintenance programme means that the new memorial garden, which has been created as part of the project, will be looking very smart for the official unveiling day on the 2nd July as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The garden will be fully open to the local public for the day.  There will be live contemporary music from the Sullivan’s sounds and a summer buffet with beverages and wine will be available.

We are very pleased to have been part of this project, working with Beard. To partner with Panoramic for your next soft landscaping project, please contact us.

Successful Urban Tree Planting

The benefits that healthy urban trees provide are significant. However, the environmental conditions found in urban areas can often be challenging to their establishment and long-term survival. To give them the best opportunity to survive and thrive it is essential that they are planted in a way that provides them with sufficient root space and irrigation.

Generally, a minimum of 3m3 of rooting volume is required to give most tree types a viable chance of becoming established. Where this amount of space is not available, tree planting and growth is still possible provided care is taken with species selection and root management. The use of soil structure modules can help to prevent soil compaction and ensure that sufficient rooting volume is available.

In addition to being provided with sufficient room, tree roots can also be directed to ensure that they do not damage surrounding surfaces or underground structures. This includes, if a tree is to be positioned within or next to a paved surface, then the tree roots will need to be directed downwards to prevent paving heave.

In order for a tree to thrive, the roots must be able to receive a sufficient amount of water. Also, if the rooting area is waterlogged then the surrounding soil may become anaerobic, which is equally likely to result in the destruction of the tree. Therefore, consideration must be given to the substance and structure of the soil surrounding a tree to ensure that there is sufficient drainage to prevent waterlogging. Also as the majority of urban trees are covered by a hard surface, tree planting should also incorporate the means to irrigate efficiently.

Many urban trees are planted in exposed locations where they are vulnerable to the high winds that can develop as a result of urban wind tunnel effects. Therefore, an appropriate form of support is required to help trees through the initial growth phase. Underground guying is often preferred for urban tree pits as it is unobtrusive. Staking is a cost-effective alternative although this usually requires ongoing maintenance.

Urban Trees in Towns & Cities Have a Positive Impact

Most people are aware of the many social and environmental benefits that trees provide. However, these are multiplied when planted in urban areas.

Trees make a positive visual contribution to any landscape. In addition, they help to improve air quality and combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere, so offsetting and regulating greenhouse gases, to combat important climate damage.

A simple mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of over twenty kilograms per year. In addition, trees also remove and store other harmful pollutants, so improving air quality, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and particulates, sulphur dioxide, nickel and lead.

Trees also counter the effects of climate change by providing shade, and by the transpiration of water, help reduce ambient temperatures and combat urban flooding. They also have beneficial effects on the physical and psychological wellbeing of the local population. This includes cutting noise pollution and urban wind tunnel effects by reducing wind speeds.

As trees planted in urban environments provide so many benefits, it is essential that they are planted in a way that will ensure their long term survival. For advice on tree selection and planting techniques please contact us.

Happy New Year

From Small Acorns: Panoramic Continues To Grow

As we enter 2022 we continue to expand thanks to the support of our customers, both long-standing and new. Indeed, we currently have a strong order book, in excess of £2 Million, although there is room for more!

In recent months we have recruited further site crews and additional site supervisors, plus we have strengthened our internal support team to ensure we carry on meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

COVID-19 and the various lockdowns have not stopped or slowed us. We have taken all relevant precautions on-site and, where possible, our office-based staff have worked from home. As a result, the site teams have not missed a day.

Thanks to the hard work of our teams, impressing clients and receiving top-quality references, sales have continued to flow. Existing clients are awarding us repeat orders (thank you) and additional new relationships continue to be formed. We are now working with over 60 different contractors.

We are heading to a real major milestone in our turnover since the business launched just 30 months ago. We will be announcing this soon.

Happy New Year – Best Wishes for 2022.

Getting Festive

Christmas Jumpers for Charity

As a bit of festive fun, the members of the Panoramic team at Hastings were invited to come into the office dressed in their favourite Christmas jumper. The photo shows what a variety of designs there was and everyone starting to get into the festive spirit.  A small donation was made by each member of the team towards a cancer charity.

Just a reminder that we finish for Christmas at the close of play tomorrow, Wednesday 22nd December and that we will be back in the office ready to start serving all our customers again on Tuesday 4th January.

Best Wishes to everyone and Seasons’ Greetings from all of us at Panoramic.

Taking Care at the Crematorium

Working with Beard Construction, we recently completed soft landscaping works at the South Oxford Crematorium. The project constituted extending the current gardens and was the first of this kind for us, as we were carrying out works in an active crematorium.

The conditions posed a unique challenge and required us to adapt our site work and deliveries so as to not disrupt ongoing services. Operating at an active crematorium came with several unexpected hurdles. However, thanks to the help of Beard and the patience of the client, we were able to overcome these as a team and learn valuable lessons along the way.

The project included the planting of 77 trees, ornamental hedging, over 1,000 shrubs and bulbs, 1,160m² of turfing plus mulching. The work was undertaken over four months and we are now beginning our usual twelve-month period of maintenance.

Keep an eye open for new posts about this site once our planting has had time to establish and flourish!  To discuss how we can take care of your next soft landscaping project please contact us.
